No space to store your bicycle?

For most cyclists and commuters, one of the main concerns isn’t about the morning traffic issues, flat tyres or showeringat work, it’s the daily dilemma about where to store your cycle safely when you are not riding it.  And if you live in an apartment or block of flats, then you may be struggling with a suitable storage space for your bicycle and equipment.

So how do you store your bike indoors if you have limited space?
To help cyclists solve this problem, you may have already come across a number of creative bike storage solutions that allow for indoor bike storage and they do not take up much room.

•  The Ceiling Mount Bike Hoist
The ceiling area of a room is something that is seldom used if ever so why not transform it with a hanging bike feature?
The Ceiling Bicycle Hoist
Eric liked hanging out with his bike.
A ceiling mount bike hoist operate with a pulley system so that with minimal effort a bike can be attached at close to ground level and them very simply hoisted up and out of the way when not in use – but you may have to crawl around to avoid head injury!  And don’t forget, some flats or apartment regulations may prevent you from drilling holes on walls or ceilings.
 • Door / Wall Mount Bike Rack
There are some bike racks designed for indoor use that take up no floor space, such as a door or a wall mountable bike rack.

Eric though he heard someone knock...

You wont be tripping over your bike anymore but you cant really open your doors either!
But as convenient as bicycles may be, they are quite bulky and not designed to be on show in your living room!  In addition to that, don’t forget that bringing your muddy bike inside your hallway or room can also be quite messy and can damage your carpet and interiors -  which probably wont be well received by your family!

We recommend a secure metal bicycle storage unit suitable for apartments and flats, such as the Twin Bike Locker from Asgard.
The 'Twin' bike storage unit is the perfect way of storing two bikes securely in a discreet manner.
Eric thought the 'Twin Bike Storage Unit' was the perfect way of storing two bikes securely in a discreet manner.
Designed as a space saving storage unit, this 2 bike store is ideal for areas where space is restricted but bike security is important.  Unlike other bike stores the Twin Bike Locker is accessed from the end so the width of the unit is kept to a minimum – ideal for use down the side of a house or flat.

An outdoor storage solution for your bicycle and equipment frees your home from clutter and dirt bought in with your bike.  You will also find that by storing your bike inside a secure storage unit, it will have fewer maintenance problems, last longer and will operate more efficiently so you and your bike can live happily ever after!

Cycle to a better lifestyle

Everybody is feeling a little podgy after Christmas… Everybody is guilty of having one too many Mince Pies.  So now the guilt has set in what is the best way to shift those extra pounds??  The gym is traditionally the most popular option in January, however with annual membership costs at £500 plus per year, that’s a lot of money – particularly if like most you go for a week or so and then give up.

Cycling is now one of the most popualr of exercise forms around.. Why??? Because it’s free of course!  In fact you can actually make money if you give up the car a few days a week and cycle to work.
Cycling is the third most popular recreational activity in the UK. An estimated 3.1 million people ride a bicycle each month.

As a form of exercise, cycling has broad appeal. Toddlers, pensioners, able-bodied or disabled people can all enjoy cycling if they have the right equipment. For cycling tips for beginners and how to stay motivated, read the getting started guide to cycling.

Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. That means it saves you money, gets you fit and contributes to a cleaner environment.
It’s a low-impact type of exercise, so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities. But it still helps you get into shape.

For example, someone who weighs 80kg (12.6 stones) will burn more than 650 calories with an hour’s riding, and tone their legs and bottom. If you ride up hills or off-road, you’ll also work your upper body.
The best way to build your cardiovascular fitness on the bike is to consistently ride twice during the week, then do a longer ride at the weekend. You’ll soon feel the benefits.

Lose weight and have fun

Cycling calendar

British Cycling’s recreation and travel sections offer information and hints on everything you need to enjoy cycling, whether you’re a commuter, mountain biker, ultra-fit road rider or first-time cyclist.
The site includes a national leisure cycling calendar, which lists everything from charity events to multi-day challenges, plus advice on training, maintenance and improving fitness.

It has suggested routes for you to ride in your area, and a function where you can map where you’ve ridden, log the miles you’ve travelled, and rank yourself against other riders.  You could join a club in your area and go on organised bike rides. To find a club, see the British Cycling website.

If you want to turn your hobby into something more competitive, there are around 2,500 races registered with British Cycling each year. There are all sorts of bike races to chose from. Visit the British Cycling recreation section to find a race near you that you can watch or take part in.

Safety tips
  • Look behind you before you turn, overtake or stop.
  • Use arm signals before you turn right or left.
  • Obey traffic lights and road signs.
  • Don’t ride on the pavement unless there’s a sign that says you can.
  • On busy or narrow roads don’t cycle next to another person.
  • When overtaking parked cars, watch out for car doors opening suddenly, and allow room to pass safely.
  • Don’t use headphones while cycling.
  • Never use a mobile phone while cycling.
For more on road safety for cyclists, read Cycling: know the risks.

Kit checklist
  1. Wearing a cycling helmet will significantly reduce your risk of serious head injury in an accident. For a proper fit, the helmet should fit snugly and shouldn’t allow any sideways movement.
  2. Before you ride, check that you have the right kit, and that your bike is in good working order.
  3. Make sure your tyres are pumped up. Test your brakes before you get on the road.
  4. Check that your saddle is at the correct riding position for your height. If your saddle is too low, it will make it more difficult for you to pedal and you’ll get tired more quickly.
  5. To get the right height, adjust the saddle until you can stretch your leg out and place the ball of your foot on the ground. This means that when your pedal is at its lowest position, your leg should be slightly bent. If your leg is completely straight when your pedal is at the lowest position, your saddle is too high.
  6. If you’re cycling after dark, it’s important that you can be seen by other road users. Wear reflective clothing and make sure the lights on the front and back of your bike are both working. Use your lights when visibility is low, such as in bad weather.
  7. Try and group together with colleagues at work and ride as a group.  This is safer and you can chat about issues of the day and/or vent your anger at the days events – reducing stress and building comradery between work mates.
  8. If you can’t cycle as a group, why not join a local club? Just get onto google and type bike club and your area.  No matter where you live there are hundereds up and down the country – there will be one.  It’s a great way to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds – people you would never normally meet.
  9. For bike routes go to your local tourist information, try the sustrains website or www.bikeradar.com for routes discovered and upoaded by local riders.
  10. Plan you own routes using http://bikeroutetoaster.com/

Cycle Ownership in the UK continues to rise

The ownership and use of cycles have risen dramatically in the UK over the last few years. As we become more aware of the environmental impacts that cars have on the environment, the benefits of regular exercise and the costs of operating a car, more people are now using cycles to combat those very problems.

Cycling Is The Growth Area For 2010
Cycling Is The Growth Area For 2010
Using a cycle clearly creates less pollution, greenhouse gases and depletes the finite resources far less than a car. Cycling is an excellent way to exercise and causes less damage to the body than jogging for instance (which often damages your knees leading to long term health issues), whilst the maintenance costs associated with a cycle is a fraction of that of owning a car.

However many people do overlook the need for specialist cycle storage - such as an Asgard Bike Shed.

Cycles are relatively easy to steal and resell if you don’t believe us try looking at some of the excellent online bike forums out there.  Almost all have a stolen bike section – where you can post serial numbers of missing bikes in the hope they may find their way back to you.  Latest Home Office figures report an increase in bike thefts.  We are currently experiencing a cycle crime wave with a staggering 220 bikes stolen every single day in the UK.

Remember your bike doesn’t have the security devices that cars and vans have. So you must have a bike lock when you are out and about.  Also consider where you are leaving your bike at home – don’t just leave it in the garden, think about getting a dedicated bike storage unit or consider a dedicated cycle insurance policy.
Your Bike - Lock It Or Lose It
Your Bike - Lock It Or Lose It
There are now over 23 million cycles in the UK and only a fraction will be covered by specialist cycle insurance.  So don't be a victim - make sure your covered with an Asgard Bike Shed.

The Battle Against Cycle Theft Continues....

As we can see, it doesn’t matter if you live in a big city or a rural village.  Cycle theft is rapidly becoming one the most common crimes in the UK.  It is beoming more important to invest in a good quality bike storage unit.

Northallerton cycle thefts -
Information sought Police in Northallerton are advising locals to ensure their pedal cycles are securely locked when at home. This follows the theft of bikes between Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 October from addresses on Ashlands Close and Bankhead Road. Among the bikes stolen were three children’s cycles, a girl’s pink BMX, a girl’s silver cycle with white tyres and beads hanging from the handlebars and a child’s JCB bike with stabilizers and pedals on the front wheels. Also stolen, from a second address, were two adult mountain bikes, one black and one green.

“The stolen bikes had been left in the front gardens of the houses.”

PC Jim Egan, of the Northallerton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Any theft is a disgrace but even more so when the items stolen clearly belong to children. “If anyone knows who stole the bikes or where they are now I ask them to contact me immediately.

Cycle Theft – Yorskhire Evening Post – Nov 2010

A family’s joy at having their daughter’s custom-built trike recovered by police has been ruined – by the theft of their three remaining bikes Published Date: 19 November 2010

By Bruce Smith – Yorkshire Evening Post

A family’s joy at having their daughter’s custom-built trike recovered by police has been ruined – by the theft of their three remaining bikes.

Just hours before hearing that her 13-year-old Coral’s vital three-wheel trike had been found, Vicky Shepherd and her partner Kier found the cycles belonging to him, Coral’s brother Joshua and stepbrother Evan stolen from the garden shed at their home in West Park, Leeds.
Now the family dare not collect the trike, vital to help Coral overcome balance problems caused by a brain tumour, until totally secure accommodation can be found for it.

Though the £600 charity-funded trike, found in woods near the West Park Centre, is still useable, a pearl blue bike belonging to Coral’s stepsister Angel and also stolen on Monday evening is still missing.

“As they came out, they were met with the sight of the shed lock forced, the door wide open and camping equipment scattered all over the lawn”.

The family discovered the break-in on Thursday morning as the children
were about to set off for school.

Unlike Coral’s bike, which had been chained to Angel’s outside because it was too large to go in the shed, the black mountain bike belonging to Kier, Joshua’s silver Reebok cycle and Evan’s new four-week-old Reef mountain bike were stored inside.

As they came out, they were met with the sight of the shed lock forced, the door wide open and camping equipment scattered all over the lawn.
They were horrified to find the three bikes worth more than £250 had vanished.
“We just cannot believe it has happened again. All the children were in tears,” said Mrs Shepherd.
The custom-built trike had helped Coral begin to enjoy life again after undergoing life-saving surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
But now she can’t go out biking with her family and the trike will be retained by Weetwood Police until safe storage for it can be found.

A spokesman for North West Police confirmed they were investigating the latest thefts and appealed for anyone with information to ring them on 0113 205 3025.

Cycle to work scheme reports record bike sales.

According to the Association of Cycle Traders, sales overall have increased by 20 per cent on an annual basis in June. One of the main reasons is the success of the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme, which allows consumers to buy a bike out of their salary before it is taxed. On top of this tax-break, the bike is also free from VAT.
This can save customers hundreds of pounds on top models.  To give you some idea of volume and in the 1st 6 months of 2009 the amount of vouchers redeemed was 26,000, compared with 35,750 throughout the whole of 2008 …

“Total sales in 2009 the Cyclescheme reported sales of £22.7m”

Roger Geffen, campaign coordinator at CTC, the national cyclists’ organisation, said: “We are now confident that the resurgence of cycling is not just a London phenomenon, it is truly national. And that has to be good for the country’s health, environment and well being.”

In London the number of bicyclists has doubled since the start of the decade, while the number of miles cycled nationally last year totalled 2.92 billion – the equivalent of 65 miles for every adult. This is the highest level since 1992.

Protect your possessions

When buying a bike, budget for security. You will need one or more locks and somewhere secure at home to keep your bike.
Make sure you don’t buy a stolen bike.
By buying a stolen bike you are helping to support the illegal trade in bikes – the next stolen bike to be bought could be yours!
By avoiding doing so you help make it less likely your bike will be stolen in the future.
If you buy a bike from a legitimate seller, it is likely to be more reliable and you’ll probably be covered if anything does go wrong with it.
Do what you can to check it is from a legitimate outlet, and that they are sure it is not stolen. If it seems suspiciously cheap, ask yourself why. You may be able to check the ownership of a bike you intend to purchase by searching a property register such as Immobilise, or asking for proof of purchase or ownership.
Take out adequate cycle insurance, either by extending your home contents insurance or through a separate policy. Cycling organisations and bike shops may offer specialist cover. Do this at the time of purchasing the bike otherwise you may not get around to it.

“More than half of all bicycle thefts take place from an owner’s property. So as well as taking care of your bike when you are out and about, you should think about how safe it is at home”.

Record and register your bike. Take a clear colour photograph of your bike and make a written record of its description, including any unique features, so that you can report it accurately if it is stolen – this will help prove it is yours if it is recovered by the police.
Protect Your Cycle
Protect Your Cycle
  • Register your bicycle model, make and frame number with a third party. (The frame number is often underneath the bottom bracket where the pedals attach, or on the frame under the seat.) Again this will help anyone who subsequently finds (or even buys) it to check whether it is stolen – and return it to you. Some registration schemes allow you to register individual bike parts that have serial numbers. Contact your local police station for further advice.
  • If you add an additional security mark or tag to your bike, this will again make it easier to identify as yours. Sometimes your local police will provide this service for free. The mark may be obvious, which should help deter thieves; or hidden, such as ultraviolet; or there may be a combination of both. Clearly visible marks should be securely applied.
  • A hidden mark or electronic tag is less likely to be identified and removed by thieves.
  • Invest in a good quality bike storage system
  • More than half of all bicycle thefts take place from an owner’s property. So as well as taking care of your bike when you are out and about, you should think about how safe it is at home.
Look Out For Cycle Theft

Some things you can do are:
  • Keep your bike in a secure cycle shed or cycle garage and get into the habit of keeping the door locked. If you keep your bike in a shed, make sure you get a robust lock for the door.
  • Secure it to an immovable object, or consider installing a floor or wall-mounted anchor lock for extra security.
If you are going to keep your bike in a communal area, is there anything you can lock it to?
  • Keep it out of public view.
  • For additional protection, keep your bike locked wherever you leave it at home.
  • A good quality bike storage unit will ensure your bike remains just that – yours!  A good quality locking system and an insurance approved unit is even better.
Out and about
  • Avoid leaving your bike in dimly lit or isolated places. Leave your bike where a potential thief can be easily seen.
  • Always lock your bicycle, even if you are just leaving it for a couple of minutes.
  • Think about using two different types of locks
Ground Anchors For Bike Security

And finally...
  • Inform the police if you have your bike stolen; you can report the theft by phone or in person at your local police station. Ask for a crime reference number. This will help you trace the progress of your case and may be needed for your insurance claim.
  • Find out about/take part in local cycling initiatives, to raise awareness of cycle security.
  • Contact your local crime prevention officer, local authority, employer or the land owner about the installation of cycle parking where secure anchorages are insufficient or nonexistent.
Remember : Don’t create a market in which thieves can operate - If no one bought stolen bikes there would be no reason to steal them.

Cycle security: You had better lock it or lose it!

How to lock your bike….

When you are out:

1. Use TWO locks for maximum security
2. Lock both of the wheels and the frame
3. Make sure that you lock your bike to an object
4. When you use 2 lock, use 2 different locks as this is harder for the thief
5. Never leave accessories on the bike – remove lights, saddle bags etc.
6. Lock it in a public area where there are lots of people around – not in a dark alley way.
7. Lock you bike tightly, leave no gaps between the frame and lock for tools to be used.

When you are at home

If you own an expensive bike and it’s hanging off the back of your car after a ride, before you stop, just check the rear view. Is there anybody watching you??
After a long ride it is tempting to get home, chuck the bike by the front door and run in for a wee!! Don’t. Take that extra 60 seconds to take your bike inside or put it in the garage. Out of sight!
Don’t wash your bike outside of the house in full view of the street.   Don’t advertise your bike to thieves!
Get a decent bike storage unit – and use it!!
Even if you keep your bike in a garage and live in a lovely neighbourhood, you should still lock the bike to an immovable object. Try using a ground anchor

If Your Bike Is Stolen What Can You Do??
If Your Bike Is Stolen What Can You Do??

If the unthinkable happens then …

You must report the theft to the police. Even if you don’t think you are likely to get your cycle back it is worth reporting the theft. Give them as much information as you can this means frame numbers, a photograph, serial numbers,,,,, where it was stolen etc…
To report your bike stolen 1st contact your local police station. Then you can also report the bike details onto some bike forums. If it is a distinctive bike you may get lucky, often these die hard cyclists will keep an eye on sucpicious looking bikes for sale on ebay etc.

Choosing a bike shed for urban commuters

If you are one of the few brave commuters that cycle in to work, you probably know that the cycling is a more healthier and more exciting way to travel into work in the morning.  Your wallet will thank you for it as you save on fuel, and you can reduce your carbon footprint by choosing to cycle in.  In fact, the majority of commuters that switch to cycling to work wish they had done it sooner!

Are you an urban commuter?
Are you an urban commuter?
Choosing a new bike is often the most exciting part when deciding to commute, but don’t forget about accessories.  Using your bike to commute to work or school is different than going out for a recreational weekend ride. The most important point is to get to work on time, which means you have to be prepared for all types of weather.   Bear in mind some of your riding may be in low-light conditions, like early morning and evening and in rush-hour traffic, so you have to be visible to motorists
One of the main discussion point when it comes to cycle commuting is security – how can you ensure your bike and belongings are kept safe?   Many organisationsand workplaces are now providing funding to support additional bike parking.  Always make sure you carry a sturdy portable bike lock and alarm to keep your bike safe.

What about when you come back home in the evening? Is your bike kept in a safe and secure place? For complete peace of mind, it is always best to store your bike away out of sight, such as in your house or garage.

However, if you don’t have a garage or space in the house, then do you have enough room to install a bike storage locker – such as the Asgard Twin Bike Locker?  The ‘Twin’ bike storage unit is an ideal way of storing up to 2 bikes securely in a discreet manner.  Designed as a space saving storage unit, this 2 bike store is ideal for areas where space is restricted but bike security is important.

How to get the best insurance cover for your bicycle.

The rising number of cyclists on Britain’s roads has inevitably led to a rising number of bicycle thefts and accidents so it is no surprise a market for specialist bike insurance has emerged.
If you have just bought yourself a new bicycle, or have been cycling for years, one of the main things to consider would be how to keep it safe and protected.  Whether you use your bicycle for practical purposes such as travelling to work, for leisure, fitness or riding competitively, it’s well worth taking out an insurance policy to protect you against theft, damage or accidents.

Think about bike security before cycling off into the sunset!
Think about bike security before cycling off into the sunset!

Before you begin

Before you apply for insurance for your bicycle, check you Home Contents Policy.  Many people will have cover for their bicycles under their home contents insurance policies, but bear in mind that some insurers do not include bikes in these policies.

Whats included in bicycle insurance policies?

Most specialist bike insurance cover a range of options including:
Third-party or public liability – the costs of causing accidents to other road-users and their property
Accidental damage to your own bicycle following an accident or fire
Hiring a replacement bicycle if yours is stolen or damaged
Roadside recovery – to help you get home if you break down mid-journey
Accidents abroad – it covers your bike while you are abroad
Should you have an accident, injure another person or damage their property while cycling, a bike insurance policy will cover the payments.  Bicycle insurance is particularly worth looking into if you have a very expensive bike or are a regular commuter on busy roads or often leave it parked in public places.

How to get the best quote

Comparing bike insurance online can be a daunting prospect, especially for those who have never done it before.  We recommend you do your research beforehand and compare market leading insurers in minutes to find the best quote for you and your bike.
Once you have found the ideal quote for you, you can contact the insurer direct to complete the application.
For more information on choosing the right policy for you, visit the CTC website - the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation.

Things to look out for

As with all insurance policies there are security requirements that must be followed.  Many insurance companies will not pay up if you have failed to do all you can to secure your bicycle. It’s well worth buying all the anti-theft equipment available and marking your postcard on the bike with an ultra-violet pen to help police to recover it should it get stolen.
Meeting security requirements for your insurance policy
Always use an appropriate security device when the cycle is not in use, which include loop locks, disc locks, chain locks, alarm systems that are Security approved, such as the Sold Secure and Thatcham accreditations.
The bicycle must be secured using a Security Approved lock, through the bicycle frame, to an immovable object i.e. stone, concrete, brick or steel, using a Ground Anchor, making the bicycle itself incapable of being lifted.
Store your bike out of sight where possible, either indoors, in a garage or a secure metal bicycle unit, such as the Asgard Addition bike store.

Asgard Addition Cycle storage unit
Keep your cycle under lock and key to meet the Insurance Policy Security requirements.
The Addition Metal Bike Store is an all-metal bike shed providing secure outdoor storage of up to 3 adult cycles and bike equipment.  This metal bike store offers excellent bike security and an ideal secure store for your mountain bikes, road bikes and general cycling equipment.

Home Office Hints and Tips for keeping your bike safe.

Keep your bicycle safe
Follow our simple crime prevention tips and keep your bicycle safe from theft.
With increasing numbers of us owning bicycles, it’s important to know how to keep them safe. Especially as more of us are being encouraged to take up cycling both to improve our health and as an alternative form of transport to reduce congestion and emissions.  Hundreds of thousands of bikes are stolen each year in England and Wales.

Help keep your bike secure by following some simple tips.

1) Protect your possessions
  • Take out insurance, either by extending your home contents insurance or through a separate policy; cycling organisations and bike shops may offer specialist cover
  • Record and register your bike
  • Security mark the frame

Prevent Cycle Theft
2) At home
  • More than half of all bicycle thefts take place from an owner’s property.
  • Keep your bike in a secure garage or bike storage shed and keep the door locked
  • Keep it out of public view
3) Out and about
  • Always lock your bicycle, even if you are just leaving it for a couple of minutes
  • Avoid isolated places; leave your bike where it can be seen
  • Hardened steel D-shaped locks are recommended as the minimum lock standard; check out Sold Secure (new window) for certified locks, or ask your local bike shop
  • Lock your bike to an immovable object – a bike rack or ground anchors; thieves can remove drainpipes and lift bikes off signposts
  • Make the lock and bike hard to manoeuvre when parked -  stop thieves smashing it open by keeping the lock away from the ground; keep the gap between bike and lock small
  • Secure removable parts; lock both wheels and the frame together

Asgard launches its first ‘LPCB Security Approved’ Bike Storage – The NEW Annexe Bicycle Shed

Asgard is very excited to launch our latest, and most secure bicycle storage unit yet – the LPCB approved Annexe Bike Shed.  The Asgard team have responded to feedback from cyclists to provide a convenient yet secure outdoor storage unit for valuable mountain bikes, hybrids and road bikes as well as cycling accessories, spares and clothing gear.

Already recognised for its range of high quality bicycle and motorbike storage units, Asgard have stepped up on the design, construction and the security features of their bike storage unit range with the NEW Annexe Bike Shed.  This all-metal bike shed is suitable for storing up to 3 adult bikes, as well as cycling accessories, spares and clothing gear safe and secure in one place.
Annexe Bike Shed
The LPCB approved Annexe Bike Shed aims to defeat bicycle thieves and encourage cycling.
As with all our units, the Annexe high security metal bike shed is built from very thick, heavy gauge galvanised steel panels but with a tough 5-point locking system and reinforced doors and hinges.  These additional attack resistant features means that the Annexe Bike Shed is a Loss Prevention Certification Board approved to Level 1 Standards.
The LPCB accredited Annexe Bike Shed will not only keep your bikes and property safe from theft and damage, it may also help with meeting security requirements for many bicycle insurance policies and reducing premiums*.’

If you are in a high risk area where security is an issue, you need maximum protection for your bikes.
Although the number of cyclists choosing to commute by bike has risen over the last couple of years, the need for adequate and secure storage for bikes is still a major concern.  Research into cycling theft figures from the Bike Revolution initiative found that over 500,000 bikes worth over £113 million were stolen in the UK in 2009, approximately 1 every 65 seconds.

Asgard have worked towards tackling these issues with the new Annexe Bike Shed by improving the outdoor storage facilities available and increasing security standards for cyclists across the UK.
And already, the Annexe Bike Storage Unit has been a hit with customers, receiving positive feedback on the new storage unit from Asgard;
‘I was pleasantly surprised when my bike storage unit arrived. The level of security is an exceptional, bolt, 5 point, pick resistant locking, ground anchoring and reinforced steel tube sections give incredible peace of mind.  A nice touch is the fact that the unit does not look like a bike storage unit, deliberate or not this element of discretion is just as important as the amount of locks.  A passing thief would never know I have nearly 10k of bikes in there’. (Denis H, Buckinghamshire)
The Annexe Bike Shed is now available to order via the company website www.asgardsss.co.uk at Special Introductory prices for a limited time – starting from just £549 (inc VAT) with Free Delivery with the UK*.

Cycling Plus Magazine rates the Asgard Access Bike Shed as the ‘Editors Choice’ product.

At Asgard, we like to think that we are the bike security storage experts, and with a number top reviews for our popular bike storage range already under our belt, Cycling Plus magazine featured the Asgard Access Bike shed, naming it the ‘Editors Choice’ product.

After a detailed analysis of the secure metal storage unit, Cycling Plus confirmed the Access unit is ‘impressively strong, with an excellent attack-proof design’ and gave it a 9 out 10 overall product rating.

Bicycle Security Alarm Systems.

For bicycle owners, cycle security is one of the most discussed topic; ‘which bike security products are best for my bike’?  Using sturdy padlocks, chains, disc locks, and ground anchors are all recommended when parking your bike at all times but the key message is clear – always double up on security where possible.

This means using at least 2 different types of security measures in order to protect your bike and deter thieves.

Choose heavy-duty, sturdy locks for your cycle.
The type of bike locks to use will depend on your type of bike, and where you are parking it.  There are a wide range of portable disc locks and chains, ideal for when you are riding around the town, as well as numerous chain locks and ground anchors suitable for securing in your back garden, garage or bike storage unit.

Double up on security

However, as an additional security measure, we would also recommend you to use a cycle alarm system, such as the Screamer Cycle Disc Lock.
The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock with attack activated alarm system.
The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock with attack activated alarm system.
The Screamer Cycle Disc Lock gives you that extra and security for your bike when not in use. Once activated, if someone is then attempts to move your bike or tamper with the lock the 100db siren will activate automatically, emitting a shrill of 100 decibels to put off would-be bike thieves and alert you.
The 7mm locking pin fits through the holes on the brake discs of the majority of cycles. There are 3 keys supplied with the lock, with a key way cover to protect the locking mechanism against dirt and dust. The lock can also be secured without the alarm being activated, if required.

Parking up your bike
And finally – Always park your bike to something solid in a visible place when out riding around the city centre.  Select highly visible locations such as busy streets or in front of store as thieves are unlikely to consider taking your bike if it’s locked out in the open.
And when you park your bicycle up for the night, make sure you store it in either a garage, or in a secure outdoor bike storage unit to keep out of sight and safe from thieves.

Bike Storage / Bike Security Buyers Guide

Buyers guide – Bike Storage and Security
So ….
You have just taken advantage of the government cycle to work scheme and bought your self a fantastic bike – tax free!  But what is the best way to store your new bike?
The first thing to remember is  that you don’t actually own the bike until your final payment, so if your bike is stolen you will not only have no bike, you will then have to continue paying for it.**
** – Recently there has been an increase in cycle thefts from locked, domestic garages. Thieves will follow you home after a ride, wait until the dead of night and cut the lock off the garage door and take the bike.  Cycles are easy to strip down and sell for parts.  Check out ebay for 2nd hand cycle spares.   Useful and interesting theft article in the Independant newspaper here.

So you really need to keep it safe, yet easily accessible by you.
Bike storage could be as simple as buying aa metal tube bike rack for around £15 from Argos and hanging it in the garage.  But, like a lot of people these days you either may not have a garage or you may actually put a car in it!  The answer would be a dedicated outside bike storage unit.
So, what are the bike storage options available to avoid bike theft?

An “economy” bike lock
These really represent a false economy; you can pick these up for a fiver down at your local hardware store or market.  A cheap chain can be cut in seconds with nothing more than a simple bolt cutter.  No matter how many times you wrap the chain around your frame these are nothing but a (slight) visual deterrent.  “Ok” for leaving your bike outside the shop for a little while in a busy shopping centre – but nothing more.  This type of lock is so bad, here at Asgard we simply do not supply them.
Cheap Bike Locks Are Useless

New to us here at Asgard is the cycle dick brake alarm”. What is it??  Well it’s an alarm that screams if anyone tries to steal your bike. These are normally associated with motorcycle security, but they are so compact and effective we like to use them as cycle locks.  All you do is push click this weighty, metal lock to one of your disc brakes – no one can ride away your bike with a chunk of metal hanging off the back wheel!! And as a bonus these locks have an excellent built in movement detector with a powerful 110db siren.  Unlike most of this type of lock, I can personally confirm this one does not keep going off in the middle of the night.  I have now had one of these on test on my own precious mountain bike in an Asgard Addition bike storage unit for a month without any false alarms.  I can even kick the side of the locked bike unit and the alarm will not trigger. However, open the unit and try to move the bike and WOW its loud.  So even if I forget to lock the bike unit up (which I often do) - No one is sneaking out of the garden with this lock hanging off the back wheel.

Asgard Cycle Alarm
Asgard Cycle Alarm
The original secure bike store.  We like to think we really got the bike storage market going with this one.  It’s compact and tough.  Designed to take up to 3 bikes (I have a road, a Hybrid and a MTB in ours).  With either full or half width shelves available allowing you to store not only your bikes, but also all of your maintenance equipment in one place (I also keep three packs, two pairs of shoes, a track pump, workstand, gt lube, oils, and a small pressure washer in mine) .  With a large double door access point that can be handed to suit your location and featuring our drill and pick resistant 3 point locking system. This all metal unit has a built in floor and weighs in at an impressive 16.3 stone.  All Asgard metal sheds come with fixing bolts as standard – these allow you to bolt the unit to the ground – I think the unit is so heavy on it’s own I have never bothered to bolt it down – trust me, these are heavy!
Add in the fact we have hidden roof vents to allow air flow and reducing condensation (not enough to dry wet clothes though) and we are talking about some serious bike storage.
Hailed by the industry as “the best bike store they had ever seen” this is an excellent way of looking after your bikes and keeping the mud and dirt out of the house.  Addition Bike Storage Customer Comments
Addition Bike Storage
Addition Bike Storage

Designed after talking to serious bikers who were looking to store either their precious carbon road bikes in total comfort (I know riders who have bought this 4 bike unit and keep only a single Carbon bike in) or for storing the whole families bikes together to free up the garage.  With a capacity of up to 4 bikes, the Access Bike Store is deeper and wider than the Addition.  Still made from the same tough weather proof steel, including a solid metal floor, but now you have the benefit of a gas lift, lift up lid.  This gives you greater access to your bikes and equipment, fit the optional hooks and shelves and you can fit all of the families cycle gear in – including packs, clothes, maintenance, shoes .… everything.  Instead of the handle lock, the Access Bike Store uses keyed alike disc locks.  Rated at level 8 (out of 10) by the manufacturer these are super tough locks hidden behind a steel plate – so your bikes will be very safe in here. Add in the fact we have hidden roof vents to allow air flow and reducing condensation and we are talking about some serious bike storage.
Access Bike Storage
Access Bike Storage
Designed in response to a lot of city based commuters who live in flats or town houses with restricted garden access.  Perfect for narrow alley ways or tucked away discreetly into a shared courtyard the twin bike locker.. well it … stores two bikes.  Still made from our heavy duty galvanised steel, the twin has the same tough 3 point locking system as the Addition bike store and comes complete with two hooks to hang your helmets on.  The perfect his and hers bike storage solution, once again featuring our hidden roof vents to allow air flow and reducing condensation.
Twin Bike Locker
Twin Bike Locker
We are now talking about some serious high security.  If you are really paranoid about bike theft then this is the product for you!  From the outside this looks just like our Addition bike store, galvanised steel, full metal base – tough and secure … but inside  we have added reinforced stiffeners to the doors, to the roof and to the general panels.  Finally we have upgraded the lock to a five point locking system (still with our pick and drill resistant cyclinder).  This means this unit, on it’s own with no further ground anchors (unlike a lot of units out there which require additional locks to be approved) this unit is Loss Prevention certified to level 1.  This can actually reduce your insurance premiums.  Like the Addition the Annexe bike store can hold up to 3 bikes and associated equipment (with the optional shelf and hook packs). Once again featuring our hidden roof vents to allow air flow and reducing condensation inside the unit.

Ground Anchors
If the budget won’t stretch to a full bike storage unit or you do actually have room in your garage for a bike you should consider a ground anchor and chain.  Asgard only supply chains and anchors we use ourselves for our own bikes – We believe in supplying goods that are good enough for us to use.  Why supply something that we wouldn’t use ourselves?  A ground anchor is a tough metal plate that is screwed into the ground or wall (concrete or tarmac) by anything up to 100mm.  You then simply thread one of our tough chains around your bike frame and through the gap in the plate.
